E Ink® technology receives International Dark Sky Association (IDA) approval

The International Dark Sky Association (IDA), founded in 1988, is the recognised authority on light pollution and is the leading organisation for combating light pollution worldwide.

Light pollution is increasing worldwide at twice the rate of global population growth and 80% of the world live under light polluted skies.

All too often, outdoor lighting installations are over-lit at night and left on when not needed. Not only is it a waste of money, but what about the impact on our environment and quality of life? In fact, the IDA reports that at least three billion dollars is wasted on outdoor lighting each year in the USA alone, and virtually every species studied can be harmed by light pollution.

E Ink® electronic paper technology, integral to Papercast® display products, was certified as Dark Sky Friendly in late 2021 under the IDA’s Fixture Seal of Approval programme.

It certifies outdoor lighting fixtures as being Dark Sky Friendly, ensuring they minimise glare while reducing light trespass and skyglow. All approved products are required to minimise the amount of blue light in the night time environment.

E Ink’s electronic paper is the only digital display technology that has been certified by the Dark Sky Association. By its very nature, e-paper does not emit any light in the same way as other commonly used outdoor display technology.

Papercast’s outdoor e-paper range offers optional night-time illumination in the form of a built-in LED light, which is activated when a button is pressed by a user.
