Your Papercast e-paper bus stop signage questions answered

In this section, we have answered common questions on Papercast’s e-paper bus stop signage in an easy to browse format. If you have a question that has not been answered here or elsewhere on the site, please get in contact, we would love to hear from you.

How can you claim to have the best e-paper bus stop display available on the market?

We recently launched our very own advanced e-paper driver (EPD) board, developed entirely in-house by Papercast engineers (read the news article here). The all new Papercast quad-core EPD breaks new ground in power performance and introduces unique features including local content rendering, partial screen refresh, built-in memory, improved data communication and on-board intelligent power management. It is 9-times more energy efficient than its first-generation equivalent, used by the majority of outdoor e-paper signage displays available on the market.

How are the displays powered?

The displays have been designed and optimised to be solar powered – we use E-ink technology with power consumption that is extremely low compared to other display types (find out more here). A solar panel charges a small internal battery to enable the displays to be powered around-the-clock. Depending on external factors, the display can run on the battery for at least 2 weeks without any sunshine. The display can also be connected to the mains power supply.

How does the display collect its information?

The display connects to the Papercast cloud-based data management platform via 3G or WIFI. Designed specifically for transit agencies, our platform offers easy integration with open data standards such as GTFS, GTFS RT and SIRI for real-time passenger information, we can also create APIs for any other data formats. We offer a broad range of predefined content apps for additional travel information such as service schedules, maps, timetable alterations and emergency notices. Users can add custom content apps and widgets, as well as develop their own using javascript Node.JS.

Does the screen work in direct sunlight? What about at night?

E-paper offers phenomenal sunlight readability, in fact the brighter the day the better the image quality, find out more about this here. In the dark, the display has an ultra-low power LED illumination edge lighting system built into the enclosure.

How is the display installed?

With solar power and wireless connectivity as standard, the display can be easily installed completely ‘off-the-grid’ within hours. The displays are supplied in our innovative ruggedized IP65-rated enclosure with a secure and flexible mounting system for easy installation to your walls, stops or posts (76-152mm diameter). Once installed, the display is configured and operated via the Papercast cloud-based data management platform.

How are the displays protected?

The displays are supplied in our innovative ruggedized IP65-rated enclosure, made from extruded aluminium with a toughened laminated anti-vandal, anti-scratch front glass, a secure fixing mechanism and integrated accelerometer. The enclosure offers the maximum protection against vandalism and the elements, such as water and dust, and can withstand in the harshest conditions, with an operating range of -20C to +70C.

What colour options are available?

We currently offer a monochrome version in the 13.3” display size but do offer a colour option for the 32” display size.
